The Stars and Stripes - States of the USA

history home

The flag of the United States has evolved as new states joined the original thirteen colonies. a quick look guide as to how the flag has evolved is given below. The years represent the date that a state was admitted to The Union and not necessarily the year that a star was added to the flag.

Over the years there have been various versions of the stars and their layout. Apparently as new flags have been created in accord with the changing numbers of States there has been no official death knell applied to the earlier versions. The number of points on a star have varied between 5 and eight although latterly the five pointed star has become the legally accepted norm on todays flags. Similarly there have been a number of different layouts of the stars.
