Born 30th December 1975 in Cypress. Tiger Woods has begun what promises to be an outstanding career after turning professional in 1996. As an Amateur he won three US Amateur championships in a row in the years 1994, 5 & 6 - a record.
Coached and encouraged by his father Earl Woods he has shown that dedication and practice can produce good results. So much so that since turning professional in 1996 he has already achieved golf's Grand Slam. This was done in some style by winning three majors in 2000 - British Open, US Open and PGA Championship (also in 1999) having already taken the Masters in 1997, only Ben Hogan has achieved the three in one year feat - and then he was not able to try the fourth, the PGA Championship as it coincided with the British Open. This was the fastest Grand Slam in the history of the majors. Arguably, if his three amateur titles are included then he has 8 majors to his credit. To go one better - on 8th April 2001 Tiger Woods became the first player in the history of the four majors to hold all titles at the same time, whilst also holding what is considered by many to be the 5th major (US TPC). In 2002 a further US Masters title put him in the elite company of Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo as being the only players to win back to back Masters titles.
Let us not forget that Bobby Jones achieved the 'old' Grand Slam (pre US Masters & US PGA) of British Open & Amateur titles plus US Open & Amateur titles in the same year - 1930.
'Tiger', nicknamed after a friend of his fathers, is already breaking many records scoring and financial. He has moved the game on to yet another level and looks set to be an influence on the game for many years to come. When making a quick comparison with other Grand Slam winners the common factors are commitment, practise and a love of the game coupled with a genuine desire to win.
