Robert Tyre Jones Jnr'Bobby Jones'(unofficial)golf home | Ben Hogan | Bobby Jones | Jack Niklaus | Gary Player | Gene Sarazen | Tiger Woods Born 17th March 1902 in Atlanta, Georgia. Died 18th December 1971 in Atlanta. Arguably the first winner of the Grand Slam of Golf in 1930 - winning the British Amateur and the The Open Championship (British) followed by the US Open and US Amateur. The amateur tournaments are now recognised as 'Majors' having been replaced by the US PGA and The Masters (Founded by Bobby Jones). Only Tiger Woods has since 'equalled' that feat by holding the modern equivalent four majors consecutively (2000/01). His early years were not easy, despite coming from a well to do family. He did not enjoy the best of health as a child and whilst showing a real talent for the game of golf he was not the gentleman that he was to become later in life. With a reasonably quick temper it was not until the 1923 US Open that the real man was to shine through. The strength of Bobby Jones lay in his mastery of the game and an iron will to win. These led him to go on and win five US National Amateur titles, four US Opens, three British Open Championships and one British Amateur title. Bobby Jones was a lawyer by profession, having studied at the Georgia Institute of Technology and then Harvard University. Jones achieved and set targets in golf that were to set a real challenge to players who were to follow. His crowning glory, was the establishment of possibly one of the most picturesque and challenging golf courses in the world - Augusta National - together with the establishment of the US Masters Tournament and its' inclusion as a Major. A fitting epitaph to the career of possibly the greatest amateur the game of golf has known. |
